About Us!

The MERSEY BUDO JU JITSU ACADEMY is a LIVERPOOL MARTIAL ARTS CLUB that teaches traditional Japanese Ju Jitsu, the combat system of the Samurai warriors and the martial art of self defence. JU JITSU is the ancient system from which the present day martial arts of Judo, Karate, Taekwondo, MMA and others, have been developed. Ju Jitsu is a highly popular discipline in its own right, consisting of blocks, punches, kicks, restraints, throws and groundwork, as well as the use of certain weapons. Ju Jitsu is found by many, to be the ideal combination of self defence and fitness training.

The MBJJA is a member of the BRITISH BUDO FEDERATION, headed by founder and Head Coach, Sensei Amos Sedgwick 10th Dan, who has trained with many of the world's top instructors and has practiced such arts as Ju Jitsu, Karate, Judo, Iaido, Kobudo, Ji-yu-ne waza, Kumite and other martial arts. The BBF is based at the Kara Jutsu Bushido Academy in Padiham. Sensei Sedgwick has passed his knowledge on, and today he continues to share his knowledge, experience and skill of over 40 years, to all of his Black Belts and students.

The LIVERPOOL AIKIDO CLUB, also a member of the British Budo Federation, have their training sessions in the same dojo, at the same time as the Mersey Budo Ju Jitsu Academy. AIKIDO "the way of spiritual harmony" also stems from Japan and originally derived from the Japanese soft style techniques as in Ju Jitsu. Aikido is a self defence system that utilises locking and throwing techniques and its aim is to essentially turn an attacker's strength and momentum against them. Pressure on vital nerve centers is also used. Aikido was developed to subdue, rather than maim or kill, but many of its techniques can nevertheless be undoubtedly excruciatingly painful and deadly.

The training at our Liverpool Martial Arts clubs emphasise the importance of learning self defence and achieving complete mental calm and control, courtesy and respect, all of which are integral parts of JU JITSU and AIKIDO training. Our top priority is the health and safety of everyone who takes part in our training sessions, aiming to train hard and have as much fun as possible while doing so. Anyone who wishes to come along, can try JU JITSU or AIKIDO, and train in one or other, or both styles of martial art. We also hold a yearly Emergency First Aid training course. This course is open to MBJJA/LAC members, their families and friends who wishes to attain or renew their First Aid qualification.

The BRITISH BUDO FEDERATION hold many courses throughout the year with various master class martial arts sessions, each conducted by a high ranking Sensei, in Ju Jitsu, Aikido, Aiki Jutsu, Karate, Judo, Kick Boxing and Kobudo, Groundwork training and competitions, to name but a few. Courses are open to all BBF members (age minimums may apply).
